OUR STORY

Caprock Advanced Care was founded by a team of physicians and nurse practitioners who have worked side by side for years in the emergency department. Through that experience, we developed a deep appreciation for the challenges patients face when seeking timely, appropriate care. Many individuals need prompt attention for urgent concerns, while others require a level of evaluation and treatment that doesn’t always fit neatly into traditional care settings.

We envisioned a model that bridges that gap—one that offers immediate access, thoughtful evaluation, and a higher level of service in a setting designed around the patient. By stepping outside of the traditional insurance-based structure, we are able to focus entirely on delivering efficient, compassionate, and high-quality care without unnecessary barriers.

Caprock Advanced Care was created to provide a place where patients can be seen when they need it, receive advanced clinical care, and have access to services that are not always readily available elsewhere—all delivered by a team committed to excellence and the well-being of our community.

Mary Elhardt, MD

Physician

Dr. Mary Elhardt, MD, a Texas native, trained at the University of Houston and University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and served as chief resident in Family Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center before spending over eight years practicing in freestanding emergency departments in Amarillo. She joined Caprock Advanced Care after witnessing how difficult it can be for patients in the Texas Panhandle to access timely primary care, and is passionate about improving access through a model grounded in evidence-based medicine. She believes trust is central to patient care and strives to practice with integrity, advocating for underserved communities and those facing systemic barriers to health. Outside of medicine, she enjoys skiing, astrophotography, ballroom dancing, scuba diving, reading, and has traveled extensively—including medical mission work in Haiti, Nicaragua, and El Salvador.

Shad Newsom, MD

Physician

Dr. Shad Newson, MD, Trained at the University of Utah School of Medicine and served as chief resident in Family Medicine at the Utah Healthcare Institute. As an Army officer, CPT Newson served in the Utah Army National Guard and the US Army Reserves in Lubbock, Texas. Dr. Newson has extensive experience in family medicine, emergency medicine, and hospital medicine. Dr. Newson cofounded Caprock Advanced Care with his longtime colleagues to provide high quality healthcare that is accessible, fair, transparent and places all decisions in the hands of patients and their providers without interference from large distant corporations.

David Pearson, MD

Physician

Dr. David Pearson, MD, brings a uniquely “unconventional” journey to Caprock Advanced Care, shaped by years of carefully avoiding anything that looked like a traditional accomplishment. While others pursued accolades, he focused on perfecting the art of showing up just in time—an approach he now applies to patient care with surprising effectiveness. He joined Caprock Advanced Care in hopes of finally putting his questionable life choices to good use in a setting that values adaptability and humor alongside clinical care. Despite his mysterious past, patients can expect attentive, thoughtful care delivered with a healthy dose of humility and perspective.

Ashley Rankin

Nurse Practitioner

Ashley Rankin, NP, was born and raised in the Texas Panhandle and brings more than 22 years of diverse healthcare experience to her role, driven by a deep commitment to serving her community. Her background in both pediatric private practice and emergency medicine has given her a broad perspective on patient care, from routine needs to urgent, complex situations. Through these experiences, she has developed a strong passion for improving access to care and reducing the barriers that many patients face within traditional healthcare systems. Outside of work, Ashley enjoys spending time with her husband and their pets, as well as traveling and gaining new perspectives that continue to shape her approach to patient care.

Matthew Turney, MD

Physician

Dr. Matthew Turney, MD, FAAEM, began his medical career as an intensive care nurse at UC Davis Medical Center before earning his medical degree at Marquette University School of Medicine and becoming board certified in emergency medicine, with over 30 years of clinical experience across multiple states. He joined Caprock Advanced Care with a vision of delivering care in a more accessible, multifaceted model that emphasizes immediate, high-quality treatment. His professional interests include research and publications on ebullism and high-altitude BASE jumping, as well as extensive international medical mission work in regions including Nicaragua, Afghanistan, Iraq, Mexico, Haiti, Ethiopia, and Guatemala. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren, along with sailing, playing guitar, and computer programming.
